Saturday, 6th September, 10.30, I am on my way to the Light House Golf Resort. I leave behind the ring road above Balchik. There is no way I can't be charmed yet another time by the ingenious sign by an unknown marketing genius - "Hybrid pigs! Alive or not!" immediately under the Black Sea Rama billboard.
I am a bit late so I ring up Elena- the Light House marketing manager. We agree that I should tell the people at the gate that I have an appointment with her. I arrive, explain to the porter and he lets me enter the complex with a polite smile.

Things look calm, at first sight there are no great signs of agitation. Mercedeses are artistically scattered in the course. At first I am startled, but then I remember who the main sponsor is and that, yes, this is an interesting way to exhibit their latest models. I draw near to the clubhouse and there I recognise the symptoms of discreet hustle and bustle. The security guards intercept me and direct me to the car park favourable neglect. From there I go back to the clubhouse and begin to dally actively. I have a look at the pro shop, which offers a decent choice of outfit, accessories and clubs. I am tempted and buy a glove. I want a black one. Unfortunately they haven't got a black one for a right hander (I'm a lefty) and so I reconcile myself to a white one. From there I go to the pub, conversations, tea and inspection of the setting. Here I can tell the groups of golfers on the course. It is now that I remember that a tournament is actually taking place here. Discreetly, calmly and obviously well-organisedly.
I spot a familiar silhouette on the driving range. It turns out to be Robin - the Varna golf club pro. I took my first lessons from him. I go to him to say hello and it turns out that he is invited to help the beginners and those who would like to try some shots. There are a lot of people, I am also tempted and find two clubs for a left hander from somewhere. I warm up and as a whole I am pleased with myself in view of the fact that I haven't touched a club for three weeks.

It's time for me to take a walk in the course. I start from hole 1 with the intention to go around all of them and sneak up to the groups of golfers to watch and take pictures. So I do, the day is wonderful, the temperature is perfect and I wish I had been more active in the practices and take part in the tournament now. It is hard for me to commentate the game, which I watched from the viewpoint of my own incompetence, but it felt like that there was cheerful mood, calmness and diligence. Somewhere around hole 7 I am ravenously hungry and I spot an acquaintance of mine from the course. He directs me to a tent hidden behind the houses under construction. I take the specified direction and indeed soon I see the encouraging silhouette of a tent, a table and polite staff. A group of three Irishmen and a Bulgarian is already there, refreshing themselves before they go on with hole 7. The atmosphere is pleasant; I have a sandwich a take a bottle of beer. The Irish take no prisoners - they take some beer for the road, too. I join this group and do about 4 holes with them. There are several interesting situations and turns. At hole 9 the four of them hurl the balls in the trees outside the fairway. It is as if the corridor formed by the bushes and trees on both sides confused them. I part with them and spend the afternoon going from one group to another. I can hear Bulgarian, English, and Romanian speech.

At about 17.30 I head back to the clubhouse. The golfers come in groups, refresh themselves in the changing rooms and the bar and restaurant gradually start to fill. I take a strategic position in the middle of the bar and hold snatches of conversations with acquaintances from the Varna golf club. The people are in a good mood and discuss their and the others' achievements, failures and comical situations, jokes are also cracked. There are also commentaries on the golf course - from good to very good. Someone explains how the terrain is a challenge to walk on in view of the heights and lows. Another one counters that this makes things more interesting. As a whole everybody shares the opinion that the play here is a positive experience.
In the meantime the hosts have arranged tables with treats and the bar gives out drinks. I grab a Jack and go for a round. Smiling faces, merry clamour, and different ages.
A voice on the microphone calls for attention. We crowd on the restaurant terrace and the course director Mihail thanks the golfers, the sponsors and the team for the realisation of this tournament. The announcement of the winners and the award of the prizes follow. In addition to the three places awarded with cups, there are two additional awards for the longest and the most precise shot. After the congratulations and the pictures the cocktail party continues refreshed by the climax of this day - the award ceremony for the winners. I leave satisfied with this day, which was brimming with golf, wonderful; company and quality drinks and food.
